From the Archives: Favorite Photos

Sand Dunes at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, June 2009

The Outer Banks in North Carolina are quite lovely and some of my most favorite memories and silly inside jokes stem from trips there.  This picture was taken during a trip to the sand dunes near Kitty Hawk. Earlier in the day we had toured the Wright Brothers’ site and the park rangers mentioned that a good spot to watch the sunset was at the dunes. I’m a fool for sunsets, and I insisted on dragging everyone along. If I remember correctly, World Cup qualifying matches were going on, so there was quite a bit of dragging, pleading and the promise of ice cream afterwards to get everyone in the cars.

What the park rangers failed to mention to us, was that if there is even a slight breeze, the dunes will turn into a massive cyclone of pelting sand.  How quickly we turned into a motley band of nomads wandering through the desert. We ventured on, and on reaching the "summit" of the dunes,we played Frisbee, whatever do you do in sandstorm? There was a little despair, this was not what we were expecting in our sunset viewing party, but what a story we have to tell.
